Works on Paper
In these layered works, Stuerzl opens a depth of landscape that traverses not only her observed natural world – its waters, plants, animals and atmosphere – but also a mindscape that absorbs the viewer. Our eye wheels through their fluid spaces like the birds and fish that populate them. Details may be singled out, with circles appearing like a lens to focus the eye on minutiae. Gestural landscapes are a tangle of vegetation that evokes the messiness of human associations. Stuerzl’s process is immersive: she takes us with her into nature. After this environmental assay we emerge somewhere altogether other, changed.
