PAPER Sydney Contemporary 2023
7-10 September
Natural elements are captured in these works, expressed with sensitivity and subtlety. These are immersive landscapes in watercolour, acrylic and ink, describing the intimate details of particular places with which Jennifer Stuerzl is familiar – their birds, insects and other creatures – and their circadian rhythms. At times single words overwrite her imagery, used like whispered incantations. Sewn with long threads, they draw nature close to the human. Circular motifs within each image crystallise and draw attention to important details. Executed over some years, with repeated visits to particular sites, they are literally imprinted with the sediments and other artifacts (like feathers) found during their gestation. They describe Stuerzl’s observations of the rhythms of our ancient continent and the inevitable changes that shift our footing on the earth.
